Introduction
Whites Tree Frogs (Litoria caerulea) go by many named including Dumpy Frogs and the Australian Green Tree Frog, These are a very hardy species and a good choice for a beginner frog owner. They are native throughout Australia and New Guinea.
Size & Longevity
Male Whites Tree Frogs are smaller than the females averaging only at 3 inches while the females can reach up to 5 inches. Some frogs however, can reach larger sizes although, this is uncommon. If properly cared for, Whites Tree Frogs can live for 10-20 years.
Temperature & Heating
Day temperatures should reach 75-80 degrees Fahrenheit which can be achieved with a low wattage ceramic heat emitter (CHE). The night temperatures can drop to 62-65 degrees Fahrenheit.
Tank
One Whites Tree Frog will need a 20 gallon tank that is taller rather than longer. For 2 Whites Tree Frogs you will need a 30 gallon, for 4 you will need a 50 gallon, for 5 you will need a 60 gallon, and so on.
The tank should be decorated with several climbing decorations such as hanging leaves, branches and vines to climb on and ledges as well.
Substrate
Whites Tree Frogs should have a humidity holding substrate such as eco earth, reptisoil, organic topsoil, or a bioactive substrate. They can have paper towel substrate but the humidity will have to be carefully monitored with this substrate.
Water & Humidity
Whites Tree Frogs need a water dish large enough for them to soak entirely in. They will need a humidity range of 50-70%. This should be achieved by spraying down the tank with a mister once or twice a day.
Diet
Whites Tree Frogs are carnivores but primarily insectivores. They should have a main diet of dubia/discoid roaches and/or crickets. They can occasionally have a superworm or two but try not to feed too often as the exoskeleton is difficult for them to digest. They can have hornworms and/or waxworms as treats. All food should be dusted with calcium and vitamin supplements.
Some Whites Tree Frogs can have a feeder lizard or pinkie mouse as a treat but these should rarely be offered as they are high in fat. You can offer one once a year and it is best to only offer these to breeding females or larger males.
Handling
Whites Tree Frogs are one of the most handleable amphibian, however this does not mean they should be handled often. Amphibians have very sensitive skin and oils on our skin can make them sick. Make sure whenever handling your frog to wear gloves or wet your hands and make sure to always wash your hands after handling.
Cohabitating
When keeping more than one Whites Tree Frog together make sure that the frogs are similar in size. Whites Tree Frogs can and will eat anything they can fit in their mouth. That being said, Whites Tree Frogs should only be kept with their own species as they will likely kill anything else.
